A Reason To Follow The Honda Classic
Friday, March 6, 2009 at 02:27PM
Erik Compton.
The pro from Miami has made the halfway cut at 138 (-2). What's the big deal about that? Compton is only ten months removed from a 20 May 2008 heart transplant, the second such surgery he has endured in his 29 years. What Tiger Woods did last June on a leg and a half was impressive. But a guy on his third heart playing a Tour event is hard to top.
Having missed the final stage of Q-School 2008 by a single shot, Compton carries no status on the Tour and currently relies on sponsor exemptions. His first start came at Dubai and resulted in a missed cut. The Honda is his second, and according to the Palm Beach Post, Compton has also received sponsor's invites to both the Puerto Rico Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
2009 is quickly shaping up as a year of regression, recession and depression. Maybe, just maybe, the endeavors of Erik Compton can help remind us that good things are still possible.
